Today Denmark, Virginia, in the shadow of the northwest side of House Mountain, is a quiet place. You only know you are in a town by the green highway sign that designates Denmark. It it somewhat hard to imagine this was once a thriving community, complete with a school, stores, churches, a mill, an ice house, a Temperance Hall, a blacksmith, an undertaker, a barroom, an inn, a machinist and even a florist.

    Harvey Franklin Chittum Jr.
     August 14, 1927 - February 19, 2019

Harvey Chittum  called Denmark, Virginia home for most of his life. He lived just up the road from the house he grew up in. However, his Chittum ancestors came from the Collierstown side of House Mountain, and it is one of those men who thrust Harvey into the news spotlight a few years ago. Watch the video to learn about the day Harvey dug up his great-grandfather, Nathaniel "Nathan" Chittum. You can read about this event and more in Sarah Clayton's essay.
